#68 – Learning the Basics
Overview
We believe it's never too early to start laying the foundation for athletic skill and competition, so at the Elementary School, our physical education program goes far beyond aimless running and random games. We have an organized curriculum, one based on California standards, that actually teaches students the basics of each specific sport. In a basketball unit, for example, the kids spend weeks learning and practicing foundational skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting before finally putting everything together for a fun and competitive game. We don't use P.E. as a time filler; it's designed for a purpose: to train students to live healthy lives, to teach them the value of practice and hard work, and to equip them for future participation in athletic competition.
